Dipstick washer
My 1098 has the plastic sleeve fitted in the engine block, I’m not sure if the circular stop on the dipstick that contacts the top of this sleeve has a rubber washer or not, I’ve seen some dipsticks with this washer which was about 1/8 inch thick. or does the plastic sleeve negate the need for this washer?

Re: Dipstick washer
Les,
If the rubber washer was the right size then yes. I added a grommet to solve that problem.

Re: Dipstick washer
Thanks Declan, my dipstick has no washers at all just the metal stop, a small point but the oil level reading will vary depending on no rubber washer or the addition of one. I also want to know if I have the correct dipstick, and would be grateful to know the measurement from under the METAL stop and the maximum mark on the stick.

Easy way of making sure - next oil change, fill the sump with the specified amount of oil and see where it registers on the stick. You might need to add a little more if changing the filter as well.
As the A Series has a generous oil capacity it isn’t worth worrying about dipstick markings. When you consider the Ford Anglia took about 4 pints of oil it puts things into perspective.

Ok thanks for that, just thought a measurement from a correct dipstick would be definitive.

Re: Dipstick washer
Hi Les
So my car is supposed to have a 948 engine according to the paperwork I have, but 18 months ago, courtesy of PhiltheHill I was able to identity the various part numbers of Block & Head to learn that it is actually a 1098.

So, to the dipstick....
Here's the length of the one I have fitted and you can compare the actual level markings too.
My engine has a metal sleeve/funnel which the dipstick just waggles around in by perhaps a couple of mm play.
The fitting itself also moves by a mm or so, but doesn't rotate or pull out.
I say it's metal, it's painted on the outside, but from the top it appears to be polished metal from the dipstick floating around on it. A salutary lesson I learned about dipsticks was when I brought my first car in early 70s.
An 1100 Mk 1 Escort, which had been fitted with a 1500 Non-Crossflow engine (from an old Mk1 Cortina if memory serves correctly) by the previous owner and I converted back to a 1300 Crossflow.
The reconditioned engine didn't come with a dipstick, so i went and got one from a Breakers, from a 1300 Crossflow Cortina. Filled engine to marks on dipstick, all seemed OK, but then I noticed the Oil Lamp flickered on some harder bends.
A little investigation and I discovered the Crossflow engines were fitted with different shape sumps on the Escort and the Cortina.
Basically by using a Cortina dipstick and going off the marks, I was a couple of pints short of oil and on taking a hard bend it was momentarily running out of oil at the pump pickup. Another dipstick was required.....

Very grateful for your reply, the tube in my block appears to be plastic but looks like yours. I will compare those measurements tomorrow. Although I am pretty sure my dipstick is correct, it’s examples like the one you mentioned that make me want to check. Thank you.
Re: Dipstick washer
Just to acknowledge your post, my dipstick is identical to yours, thanks for help.
