engine suggestions

Post by tails1950 »

hello i got a 1100 morris engine for a project car. the engine was full of water so needs a full rebuild . i had a scan around on here but it seem more set on changes or repair sorry if i missed a similar post . im thinking of giving it more power upgrades while rebuilding but i have no idea what is worth doing or possible and realistic. or im i barking up the wrong tree and should look at a 1300 im not worried about originality or looks as the car is a mess and would take more than worth to make her mint . any help would be appreciated thanks

Your best bet is to get a copy of David Vizards book on tuning the 'A' Series. It will give you all the information you require to upgrade your engine.

A broad question with some naunce and many opinions I think. As above Vizard's book is a great resource.

In short, I'd say the 1275 may be the easiest option but from what I can tell they are getting more and more difficult to find - and more expensive!

All the engines benefit from cylinder head work (more often than not a swap for the 12G940 or 12G295 casting) and then a larger carb and less restrictive exhaust to take advantage of it. A camshaft change can help to get a little higher valve lift too, the consensus is 'racier' cams aren't worth it for the 1098 as the crank is a little weak and you'll go deaf revving it that high.

After the above my 1098 was perhaps equivalent to a standard 1275 but a little more strained, although I was dead proud when the number on the dyno started with a "6"!

iv borrowed a vizards book and seems very heavy going. so thought ill se what members have tried and know works. iv read a post about the mini heads but said the block needs pocketing is there a post on here which runs you through the process. iv got a bigger carb in the pipe line on the cheap and i was thinking of a bigger free flowing exhaust. as regarts the cam shaft if you take out the racer cams is there many other options as iv only seen what is sold on esm. sounds like you done a cracking job monty4 and a good reward for your effort. thanks for the link phill i may get a copy so i can take longer reading it maybe 2 years

If you find the Vizard book heavy going you can always try these:-

There are lots of books on tuning the 'A' Series.

Here are a few from my reference library to consider:-

I would suggest that you look for a 1275cc Midget engine (and gearbox) - a straight bolt in exercise and you have near doubled your power output without doing any expensive modifications.
