Dear Wise Members,
Your advice on the latest little adventure I'm having would be appreciated.
It all started with a sporadic metallic noise coming from the direction of the back axle, most noticeably when changing up to/down from a higher gear. Sounded a bit like the exhaust was dragging on the ground whilst being ground up for scrap. Slow down - it stopped.
A bit of sleuthing narrowed the culprit down to the diff. Good theory.
It's now out and I can only note that the big (flywheel?? ) has play in the bearings that hold it steady. Apart from that, no obvious damage or wear. Saying that I have no idea what I'm looking for.
I'm thinking this may be it and but a new diff (4.22:1?) but if I've chased down a rabbit track and just had a "meet your differential" afternoon well, nothing's ever wasted.
All the best

Check the UJ's on the prop shaft the noise you heard sounds more like one has failed.
