Remote brake fluid reservoir

Post by RichardB1000 »

Hi All

I've been looking at the remote brake fluid reservoir (part No FBK901) from ESM and it says it's for the disc brake conversion. Struck me it would be useful for the standard set up. Has any one used it in this way? Any reason it couldn't be used this way.

I'm also intrigued by the plumbing - the pipe connector on the fitting to the master cylinder seems to be vertical so where is the flexi pipe to the reservoir routed? Or does the fitting provided replace the drain plug rather than the existing top up cap?

Interested to hear of anyone's experience.

Thanks

Richard

Interesting first question.
Welcome to the Forums.

A) the Disc conversion requires more fluid because of the size of the caliper pistons, the extra capacity isn't really needed on drum brakes.
I don't have discs and have no problem with the standard arrangement.

B) The connection is a flexi pipe and goes on the back (drain plug) of the Master Cylinder, fitting to the regular Filler Cap would be somewhat impractical since it's under the drivers feet... :-?

It can be used with standard brakes. The advantage of the remote reservoir with the standard brakes is that you can see and fill the fluid witohut having to faff around under the carpets to check, and less risk iof crud getting into the system. Not needed, but useful.

I've been looking to upgrade to disk brakes, and noticed that FBK901 is listed as not suitable for silicone brake fluid, which I use. I questioned ESM why, and was told they thought it was something to do with the fluid reacting with the hose and supply tank, said they would try and confirm, but no further word since. If that's the case, I'm sure there are other set-ups available that are silicone-compatible. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks

53lake,
My kit uses copper piping. It comes in two sections which are joined together by a union with a drain facility. I now have a laser cut stainless steel mounting bracket.

When I first fitted a remote kit, it was supplied with flexible hose. The silicone fluid seeped out through the hose, ie the hose was permeable. I replaced it with copper-nickle tubing and have since had no further issues. Declan's work is always to the highest standard, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

This is the hose I use between the remote reservoir and the master cylinder.
A short length of brake pipe with a formed end and a olive soldered on the other is fitted to both the reservoir and master cylinder. The Cohline pipe joins the two.

Hi,
My remote reservoir leaked fluid through the hose as if it was porous and usefully removed a section of bulkhead paint below it.
How much do your kits sell for, it looks very impressive. :)
