engine breather 1275 engine

Post by Classiccars »

hi this i believe is the engine breather on the 1275 engine. It is placed at the very front of the engine opposite the fan,Looking at it the cannister part goes directly in to the engine and is on a plate directly on to the front of the engine. There does not seem to be any way to remove it other than taking the whole plate off with it Has anyone else taken one off the 1275 engine and do i need to take the plate and screws off to release it as cant see any other way to remove it

To remove the breather and because it is brazed to the timing chain cover you have to remove the timing chain cover complete. The breather is not separate to the timing chain cover. Remove the fan belt, the crankshaft pulley and the bolts holding the cover to the front engine plate. You can then slide the timing chain cover/breather assy over the front/nose of the crankshaft.
It will be easier with the radiator removed.

The top photo is a Marina 1275cc 'A' Plus engine. The breather canister can be seen at the front of the engine.
The second photo is the front of my engine. The breather canister can be clearly seen and it illustrates the requirement to remove the crankshaft pulley to remove the timing chain cover. The crankshaft damper fitted to my engine is slightly different to your crankshaft pulley but the requirement to remove the crankshaft pulley remains the same.

The gasket requirements depend upon the timing chain cover fitted.
If you have the timing chain cover with the bulge covering the timing chain tensioner you will need the following gasket:-

If you have the timing chain cover without the timing chain tensioner bulge you will need the following gasket:-

I would suggest that whilst you have the cover off you replace the timing chain cover oil seal. This is the seal required:-

If you need a new crankshaft pulley lock washer this is the lock washer required:-

This is the later lock washer - one part of the washer is knocked into the half moon recess in the pulley the other part is knocked against a flat of the starter dog/crankshaft nut.
