1098 heater valve what's the latest on these?

I remember from past Minors I have owned that there were periods when the 1098 heater valve was considered poorly made and unreliable, mine is dripping a bit (1969 saloon) so need a new one, should I buy the original spec item or something else? 20 years ago a Vauxhall Chevette (I think) inline valve seemed to be popular and I fitted one from a scrap car to my van and it was indeed reliable and operated with the standard cable. Gone are the days now when you could find a Chevette in a scrappy I think, so what would you fit? Just the older type tap and forget the cable?

I fitted the older tap type on my convertible and I just turn it on as the weather changes,never given a problem.
My Traveller has had 2 cabled valves fitted in a short time and Ive been lucky with the 2nd one ...so far

Yes, just fit the older type tap. I keep mine open all year round - there is a school of thought that this allows for better coolant flow around the rear of the engine block.

Personally, I would look at the present valve to see if it can be serviced. Sometimes the older kit is far better quality than the replacement. They are often better, when refurbished, than many replacements (even when still new).

I think I might go with the older type tap - it's simple and unlikely to fail.....easy to revert to original if I ever felt the need to - and cheaper. Thanks everyone for the replies

on their web site worth ordering a catolouge from them

No problems with it. It can easily be adapted for Minors.

This is what i used I think it was a vw golf part, put VW golf heater valve in google and you will get loads.

There are 2 minor issues, it uses 5/8 rather than 1/2 hose ( I found the hose I had did stretch over it though) and it works the other way round so you end up with push for off rather than heat. Heater works really well though.

To be clear, you're saying that this one does indeed avoid fouling the rocker cover? Good news if so! Last time I had the rocker off, the heater valve had to be loosened but not totally removed (no significant coolant loss).

I just installed an ESM replacement for the original cable operated heater valve and it works a treat!

I try to get the best of both worlds - straight hose take-off on the head, a t-piece and then the valve Declan posted. A pipe runs from the T to a thermostat sandwich plate so there is always the possibility for flow through the head.

Then again I spend too much time over-thinking these things and I'd expect the latest valves from ESM to be fine.

Here's a photo of the valve. It operates very smoothly. The take-off plate I have laser cut for the XPAG engines.
