Some years ago I bought an engine because it was cheap and local.
It has an '1100' tag on it, is not fitted with a mechanical fuel pump, and has a 202 head on it.
There is no identification tag riveted to the block.
The only way it differs from other 1098 engines that I have seen is that it has not got a starter dog, just a hexagonal bolt.
Any ideas what it might be from?
Thanks. John.

Re: Engine ID please
If the ID plate has been removed, then that was probably done during a reconditioning process (skimming/facing). The plain hex head retainer was fitted to transverse engines where a starting handle could not be used, but I have often seen them on engines that have been reconditioned "back in the day" when it was much more of a production line - the fittings are interchangeable aaprt from one allowing the use of a handle and the other not, so the operator would grab whatever was handy.

Re: Engine ID please
The Sprite/Midget 1098 engines would simply have a plain hex head wouldn't they? There is no starting handle for those cars.

Re: Engine ID please
What is the block number?
The number can be found below the rear cam follower cover.

Re: Engine ID please
Sorry to tell you you have a standard Minor 1098cc engine fitted with a standard Minor 12G202 head.
If the block had the number 12G432 cast into it now that would be a different matter.
12G432 is the 10CC engine block casting number which has the 2" mains, 12G295 Head and different flywheel.
There are two crankshaft pulley hexagon headed bolts.
The one with the dimple in its front face is for the 'A' Plus engine.
The one without the dimple is for the pre 'A' Plus engine.
It is most important that you fit the right bolt relative to the pulley as there are slight differences in the pulley to bolt contact faces.
You can override the differences by fitting the Mini Spares crankshaft pulley cap headed bolt and large washer.

Re: Engine ID please
Thanks Phil.
I was going tov try to replace the hex bolt with a starter dog bolt.
Is this a bad idea? Should I leave it well alone?
Thanks. John.

Re: Engine ID please
It is not a bad idea.
You can replace the bolt with a starter dog bolt.
It is only when you come to replace the damper on 'A' Plus engines do you have to be careful and fit the right bolt with dimple.
