Which gearbox?
It's generally considered not worth rebuilding a 948 gearbox as the later 1098 box is better. If you can DIY then it is often worth to take a gamble on a second hand box, but if you have to pay for someone to fit it, this can be a false economy.

Difficult to do without stripping it. But if all the gears select OK and there is no excessive play in the input and output shafts then you might be OK. If you fancied taking the side inspection panel off you can check the condition of the gears for chips etc...

basically you will need to buy 2 x ball race bearings. poss £20
2 sets of needle rollers (£10) for lay shaft. prob not ness to replace lay shaft. difficult to get old needel rollers out. If you change 1 you must change both. (v important.)
prob 2nd gear syncro, not sure what they cost these days. they are avalible.
rear oil seal. couple of paper gaskets. you could fit the new type of oil seal on the input shaft, and thats about it. There is a phosphur bush on the1st motion or input shaft. you may find extras on each gearbox depending on what your original problem was, but that is the basic. so it must be below £75.

Lip seal conversion for the input shaft is around £30 ish

The other important bit when reconning is to replace the output shaft bush. Unfortunately it has to be fitted and then reamed to size. (decent machine shop required with adjustable reamer - some engine recon places have the tool, some not). Then also a new lip seal at the propshaft end.

well im looking at two excellent mogs, a 948 that has a rattly 3rd gear & has jumped out in the past & a 1098 with a crunchy 2nd gear that loves to jump out.

just wondered how much it would cost to sort.

The 1098 gearbox is far superior - plenty second-hand ones about. The 948 box is a poor weak thing - most throw them away and fit 1098 boxes !

Nope, it's 918cc and that was the joke. About you getting the cc wrong as you are an a-series man, not a sidevalve man.

Hmmm - I used to have three Morris 8Es with that engine - but you are of course right - it's my memory that's failing - it's been a long day !! "Overtired" - 918 it is !!

Re the original question; it cost me £231.50 for a rebuilt gearbox from John Evans in 30.6.2004 and £133.85 to fit it by Allen Hill in 1.7.2004. It hurts, but sometimes the money is worth less than the time.
Both box and the fitting have performed well over the last 10,000 miles.

If cash is no problem - go this route. I would look for a second hand unit - and stick it in myself ! In fact - I have one 'in stock' - but it's not for sale !

I know you live in Wiltshire, but Chertsey Minors (Surrey) do 1098cc boxes for £180 exchange. I've not seen them cheaper down South.
