cheesgrater grill

HI ,just having a clear out and found a cheesgrater grill ,I have one on my car but this one is a different size just wonderd if
there were two different sizes made.
The one on my car measures 18 inch high by 41 inch long the other one measures 16 1/2 inch
by 45 inch long. These measurements are only approx.

Does it look like it may have been originally chromed?

No it was not originally chrome it was a light green the original colour.

Hi, it looks like the top one fits a mid 1951 mm highlight model when they changed the lowlight wings to highlight ones.
you can tell by the sides, they fit the earlier hockey stick chrome trims. Cheers

I would agree with that. The earlier grilles were chromed and were a separate piece from the grill front panel. During 1951 there was a nickel shortage and grills and hub caps were painted
The 2nd grill was used from 1952 on Series MM to 1954 on Series II.

The one fitted to the car must have be a custom or one off made for the car as cheese grater grills always had the side lights on the grill. Once the later slated grill was fitted the side lights are moved to the wings.

You are right David, the 1st grille is Series MM/II Highlight, the 2nd grille looks like a cross between early and late Series II with short hockey sticks and sidelights in the wings. What is the chassis no and what instrument panel does it have? There is at least one Series II with a late interior and early grille.

Fairly sure that second grill has been created, perhaps as a fibreglass mold, from an early centre and late panel. On my late model car I considered the early type grill as things are a bit crowded in the engine bay and I use a mesh instead of the inset metal grill which won't fit. The second grill gives food for thought as it doesn't interfere with the indicator/sidelight positions and doesn't look modified - except to those that know about Minors. Hmmmmm ....

I'm wondering if there was a brief period when they fitted cheesegrater grills with sidelights in the wings. It seems a lot of effort to cut the centre section out of one grill and the ends of another grill and weld them all together. Is there any evidence of welding on the back of the panel? What is the chassis no?

The car with the unusual grill has the wiper motor in the engine bay, pointing to it being a late Series II or even a 1000 ( can't see the screen but presume its a splittie). My guess is maybe the grill on the car is not factory fitted, but fitted at a later stage and, as the the car already has sidelights in the wings the holes in the grill were filled in. Is there evidence of this at the back of the grill?

The hockey sticks on the car are too short for normal cheesegrater grill.
I thought that all Series IIs had the wiper motor inside on the right

Not the cheese grater Series II Mike. Wiper motor is in the dash, same as MM's the cheese grater Series II has the same dash as the MM. The motor was moved to the engine bay with the new dash design.

Also the coil on this one seems to be on the generator, not up on the firewall. I'd put money on it being a later Series II with slat grill which has had a cheese grater modified to fit - though why remains a mystery

Hi Sorry for not replying but i have been away. The cheese grater grill on my grey car is a made up one you are right.It is the background from the slat grill and i then welded the cheesegrater to the inside. My car is 1959 but I like the cheesegrater look . Only asked the question about the other one as this was brought to fiton my othet Moggie . When attempting to fit I found it to be too big. That is why i needed to know what model it was off so that i could put it on e bay for sale.
