waxoil?
underneath my restoration minor, i have spent 200 on welding and it's all sound. However, there is still a considerable amount of surface rust underneath, it's not rot through, just niggly and could turn to rot a couple of years down the line. I asked a friend of mine and he reccons, not to rub down, prime and tarpaint underneath but use waxoil as it eats rust and protects the car from rust? but what do you lot reccon?
cheers

Re: waxoil?
My son is looking into having this done profesionally by a firm in Northwich area (I think) They told him that waxoil professional now has a rust treatment added into it to react with the rust making it harmless. I presume it's got a phosphoric acid type substance in it.
Re: waxoil?
You MUST wire brush and treat heavily with a rust killer such as Kurust. Then i would (and did many years ago) apply a good undercoat (zinc rich if you like) and then a good coat of chassis black or similar hard wearing paint. The waxoyl coating is more for spraying in to closed cavities where you don't have access. A thin film over the paint etc won't do any harm - but not much good either...

Re: waxoil?
Dinitrol make both an underbody waxoil and a cavity one, in a rattle can and spay gun. Supposed to be the 'high-end' product. But yet to try it myself.
I have tried another brand in the past on the under-body and I didn't think it was very effective. As pointed out, it's more of a cavity wax.

Re: waxoil?
I would use a wire brush on grinder (or drill, but that would be a lot slower) to remove the rust then paint with a high quality anti rust paint such as this http://brantho-korrux.co.uk/page4.html Brantho Korrux 3 in 1 paint.
Then when the paint is dry apply a wax coating such as waxoyl (or better still) Dinitrol 4941.
Please don't use underseal, it is horrible stuff that merely hides problems and does nothing for long term rust prevention. In fact you are better of with paint and no underseal. Undersealing a car is like papering over the cracks!
For seams and welds use a good quality polyurethane seam sealer and paint over that.

Re: waxoil?
well i just got a tin of the old underseal and gave the underneath 2 thick coats, managed to get in all the corners with a brush.
did this on a really hot day when the under floor was really dry.

Re: waxoil?
i use old engine oil... as my father did many years ago.
brush of all muck etc then with a garden pressure spayer
spray it all over the underside.. not the exhaust, prop. etc.
its cheap, mostly free and works. can be sprayed in the chassis.
i get a couple off old sheets fom charity shop to lay under car
first. leave it to stop dripping job done.

Need to clean any surface rust off beforehand.
Certainly the ONLY way to stop corrosion to the front wings - although you DO need to
have them off first!
Have the kick plates off, door cards too to oil the bottom of the doors.
If using the car in wet weather, use grease/vaseline around splash/spray areas which
would wash the oil off - check every 6mths.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Re: waxoil?
If you are concerned about the oil being acidic due to being used in the engine, use the old gearbox oil as an alternative.
I also use new oil that is left over from oil changes and mix it with grease to paint onto the chassis and other areas.

Re: waxoil?
As an experiment, some years ago I mixed engine oil with waxoil, and used it to spray the rear of the underside, whilst using just waxoil on the front.after three years, the rear was still soft and sticky, whilst the front had hardened,Guess what went on the next time and subsequent times and also what is now inside the cavities and inner sills. It also sprayed much better with the shultz gun.
