Best treatment/paint for underside/chassis?
I need to set about sorting the underside and chassis of our pickup.
It's all structurally sound but mostly covered in surface rust. I intend to wire brush off all the lose flakes and as much surface rust as possible.
My question is: what is the best treatment or paint I can apply once the worst of the rust is removed?
Ideally I'd prefer a paint type finish that dries rather than an 'underseal' type product that remains soft. If an option, I would prefer a matt or satin black finish to a gloss finish.
Cost of the treatment isn't too much of a worry - I'd rather it did a good job rather than need redoing in a few year's time.
Any recommendations much appreciated.
Cheers Chris

Look on ebay for vactan rust convertor.Use this after you remove as much rust as you possibly can before you use stonechip.Another good product I have used is made by tetrosyl,it comes in large aerosols and is a wax based black product.Avoid underseal!!!!

you're better of with a soft product, hard finish can get chipped by stones and let the water underneath.I have used waxoil for years on top of painted and unpainted areas without any problem, but not as good as it used to be 20 years ago.

The tetrosyl product also remains soft and its thicker than waxoyl. The aerosol gives a great coverage.

I'd quite like it to look a tidy, uniform finish. whilst probably very effective waxoil over unpainted rust will look a bit uneven and 'scruffy'.
Maybe a coat of some sort of paint (to make it uniform black) and then a coat of waxoil might be the answer?

The vactan kills the rust and leaves a black satin finish, the tetrosyl gives a smooth finish because its sprayed on but of course its up to you.

Just had a look at the vactan product. Looks like that'll do the job. Thanks
It sounds similar to Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 that I use already (but a lot cheaper).

This is the product.[frame][/frame]
Re: Best treatment/paint for underside/chassis?
So Mick, would you use Vactan first and then Tectyl (both) or one or the other?

Both. And have done many times.A litre of Vactan will do all the car with some left over.3 cans of wax(2 if you're tight)will give you a really thick, lasting and good looking finish.Use it inside your doors etc too.

Don't be too surprised when you start scraping and wire brushing - to discover that paint choice is the least of the worries.......
Re: Best treatment/paint for underside/chassis?
yep i think you will need a welder!!!
get a wire brush on a drill bit....

Thats a complete waste of time.Nowhere near the grunt to remove anything but light surface rust.Rotary wire brush on an angle grinder minimum requirement.Give it some hammer!
