Dashboard holes. Sheffield Moths?

Post by RobThomas »

Does anyone know what the 2 circa 8mm holes are to the side of the glovebox hole of this 1949 car? Not found on our 1952 so whatever was meant to go there was deleted at some point at the factory. I don't recall removing anything from there during the strip-down.

Strange how many weird things things you discover when you start rebuilding![frame]Image[/frame]

It looks like s normal M1000 glove box with speedo screw holes incorrectly fitted to a Series MM. I doubt if the original holeless boxes are still available.

Your progressing well with the rebuild, this bit is always a pleasure!

I had a look on my May 1950 MM and it doesnt have those holes but does have the smaller ones on the corner for the dash speedo panel

These holes are the ones I meant. (Sorry. Badly explained) They aren't found on the 1952 car. This one was presumably either an Australian export or a CKD car but it hadn't been messed about with so they must have been drill/pressed at the factory and BMC wouldn't have done anything like this without reason. Not easy to see but the 3 small threaded holes for a LHD dash are still there as well.[frame]Image[/frame]

The glovebox liners are ones I happened to find in the loft. Seemed a shame to spend out on correct ones just for the sake of originality. I'm not doing anything to the car that couldn't be reversed so I have permission from 'management' to use them. I have a right side one going spare so I guess they must have come from a late srs2?

All my old cars seem to have miscellaneous holes like that. I put it down to a long history and lots of character.

I'm not sure what I removed from them but my 49 also has those holes. They are factory.
