wheels

Post by kimg »

Guys I need your advice

I want to repaint my old english white traveller wheels.

I propose to do them one at the time as I do not have the jack up facilities.

I have bought the right zinc based primer, paint stripper and spray cans and a tin of Old English white

I intend to take the wheel off, replacing the spare, Strip, prime, paint and replace.

Any tips (I can always take it to my paint shop mate when it all fails)

Cheers

Are they rusty or are you just wanting a re-paint?

If they are rusty at all then the best thing is a shot blast and etch primer. This is usually about £10-£15 per wheel (I think) from shot-blasting places........

If you want an excellent job then I suggest that you remove the tyres. I don't think the paint stripper will do the tyres much good if you get any on them!

As CAM says, if you want a proper job then it is a 'tyres off'
and professional sandblast of the wheels job,(cost me £10 per
wheel recently), but the wheels come back in absolutely mint
condition ready for priming/painting. If you do not want to go
to that much trouble then you can leave the tyres on but have to
paint the sidewalls carefully with NEAT washing up liquid. When it is
dry you can spray paint on with gay abandon because it will just wash
off with a scrubbing brush(not WIRE)!! when the paint is dry.
It is important to rub down the old paint with wet and dry paper until
you are satisfied that it is ready for the new paint. If there is rust
present then using a drill with a selection of wire brushes is the
answer. (USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES).

Standard minor rims - especially with old / balding tyres are not worth anything so it may be worth to have a look round to get a set of 4 for about £5 (or less).
This way should allow you to get your own set of 5 wheels together in one go. The paintshop is certainly going to be more friendly about painting 5 wheels in one go rather than one wheel 5 times (the labour to clean out the spray gun will be as much as the spraying so doing it 5 times isn't very practical)

so my plan of masking tape over the rubber, paint remover on the wheels to get to the rust for a bit of a brushing or rust converting and then old english white paint is a no-no then? I really should find out how much the sandblasting in this area is (I get the feeling it will be terribly expensive).
Do you have to use a special primer as I was just gonna spray them with finnigans number 1 primer (or just several coats of old english white).

Making tape or washing up liquid on the rubber works fine & if you rub them down well & are reasonably handy with a spray can you can get just as good a finish (although as Willie says the sand blast etc is the "proper" way.
It all depends on how flush you feel.. The "proper" way is going to cost you at least £50 for the shotblasting & tyre removal/refit plus the paint. The paintshop is going to charge you £50 - £100 to spray them too if you go that route.
The other way will cost you about £20 in paint.... :)

blasting

Post by Willie »

Shot blasting versus sand blasting? Yes it is a case of horses for
courses. The expert knows which is applicable to each type of
job. The wrong type can cause irrepairable damage to the metal.
CHIEF. I had mine blasted to virgin metal then I sprayed with
Hammerite smooth (because it is designed to spray straight on to
bare metal) and finished off with '5 wheels silver'. I then sprayed
with clear top coat.

The reason I asked is that you can only get sandblasting done round my area, and even that may not be true as it was just a rumour floating round :) Either way for the minute im broke after spending all my money on the car anyway

Someone on here said they had their wheels shotblasted and powder coated. Powder coating process ends up with a fantastic and very tough finish. I quite like the idea of that. Maybe after the welding and MOT is done I'll get a quote or two.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO
