Paint - what's going on here?

Post by GavinL »

So today I cut back the paint to see what's underneath.

Vanessa has been painted white most recently, underneath is chocolate brown, which has been sprayed over the original Peat. What I'm curious about is what are the red and green under the original Peat - would Peat have had red primer / green undercoat?

I'd 'guess' that the deep sanding scratches under the red suggest a bare metal respray in the past?

The red and green are the original primer and undercoats beneath the original "Peat" colour coats.

Thanks - the red primer I understand, but I'd expected grey primer. Was green primer used widely I wonder, these days one is used to white or grey primer generally, or is that only the diy market?

If what ever medial you are using is the cause of those deep scratches in the steel surface, then stop now.

Don't panic Rod, I didn't cause them! These were caused by a previous owner when they bodged the rear wheel arch flange with fibreglass. I'm going to buy an orbital sander for stripping the white and brown paint.
