Traveller doors

Post by Victorplum »

Hi,

My 1962 traveller is going in to the local MM garage to get the wood stripped of yacht varnish in four weeks time. They will then apply Sikkens as the car is used throughout the year. The rear doors are beyond repair so I am happy to buy a new set. The MM garage are ok to stain them and fit them for me. I just have to buy them. I contacted Woodies but they have an 8 week turnaround. Then I found these on Ebay and wanted to check with you guys to see if they appear to be ok? They look good to me but maybe i'm missing something?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

This firm also seem to have a good reputation from what I have been told.

I have no knowledge of the company, but the photos are not the clearest. The hole for the lock barrel is missing, you will need to use a drill with a stop and make precise measurements when cutting the hole. You need to check that all edges are clean. Are the fillets included to hold the glass in place? The description seems fair and you have a choice of pairs, so depending on location, it might be best to view.

Thank you for the replies.

Ill give that company a call tomorrow as the prices are not listed online.

Wouldn't doors come without the hole for the barrel lock wherever I got them from? I will ask them about the fillets. What I don't understand from their listing is that they say they have lighter and darker doors. I thought doors made from Ash would all come as a light shade?

I guess the hard part is going to be matching the existing wood frame to the new doors. Its being done by Morris Minor Millennium in Manchester so hopefully they will do what needs to be done to get all the wood looking the same.

Woodies doors come with the lock and hinge holes predrilled - I'm fitting mine at the moment. Ash does vary a bit in colour, so it would be useful to be able to view if you could. I don't know the company on ebay, but their feedback seems to be for mechanical items for minors and motorbikes, not for woodwork, so it is possible they are selling rejects or seconds from a different source. Their photo does show the fillets in place on the doors, but while not a concern for you the frame doesn't have the holes for the rear lights, which would be even more difficult than the lock hole to get right!

Thanks Mark. Will try and source them from elsewhere. Although, wouldn’t a specialised Morris minor garage be able to create the holes without a problem?

Just purchased the doors from Traveller Timbers as mentioned above. The guy seems very knowledgeable. Many thanks for the link :)

Well done. Was forgetting that you are using a specialist rather than doing it yourself - although even the specialist restorers would expect the frames to come carefully drilled by the frame manufacturers.
