Series MM (Later) Series II Windscreen trim clips.

Post by firedrake1942 »

So, the great day arrived when the pair of trialled chrome plated reproduction windscreen trim clips for later MM / Series II were fitted to the earlier Series II convertible from which the donor clips came.

Some cursing and swearing was muttered as we all, repeatedly put the top clip, upside down, on the bottom, slightly denting it in the process but once reflection time had been taken the clips pushed fairly easily into an ESM supplied replacement windscreen rubber and the centre pillar was replaced and tightened (not too much as lack of flex then can cause the glass to crack.)

We were really pleased with the result. A small amount of fettling (in this case a gentle tap with a wooden former and rubber mallet) will be needed on the top RH edge of the upper clip (Photo 2/3) and I think fettling of some degree will be needed, somewhere, on any car as all are different and these are not precision parts, especially given that we are dealing with slightly differently profiled screen rubbers.

We still dont have a unit price for the clips so final cost is difficult to ascertain, but the chrome plating is absolutely top notch.

Colin, the owner of the car is also ecstatic as whilst we have had his old clips he has not been able to take the car out. We owe him a great deal.

Excellent! They look a really good fit.
Years ago I had my windscreen chrome replated, it all turned out well and looks good but in hindsight it could have all gone terribly wrong buffing those fragile sections!

We have been thinking about just such a problem. Apparently it was not so much the difficulty of producing the trim that was the problem and indeed one of the biggies apparently did so, but when it came to polishing, they buckled all over the place.

Looking at producing a wooden former on which such trim could be laid / fixed whilst polishing to avoid the bending. All the bits we have reproduced so far have required an example donor piece (which has come out the other side intact) and getting both sides to make a template / mould would be difficult as no-one wants to take them off their car - not unreasonably!

Off to Charles Ware’s in Bristol today to look at the ongoing work on RER919.

Some interesting cars including their fist foray into electric propulsion with a variomatic type motor and modified prop straight to the diff.

Andy and Wayne have loaned us a set of Series MM / Series 2 windscreen trim to straighten and try and reproduce having shown a great deal of Interest in the clips we have made and just received from a second chromer.
