Steve, yes that's a SII rad. Perfectly fine for use with a 1098 (or any A-series for that matter).

It doesn't make much difference, does it? Apart from maybe a pint more coolant?

My series II has a series II radiator.

Well it depends on how you want to plumb the heater return. On the SII it returns to a spout under the rad, and on the 1098 set up it returns to the bottom hose.

You can use any option you want as long as you've plumbed in the heater return somewhere and blocked any spare holes ;-)

I've never noticed any spare holes in my radiator, my return hose goed to the bottom hose as you said.

It's entirely feasible that the thermostat had stuck. I've seen it many years ago on an A series Marina. The oil on the rocker shaft was actually sizzling away nicely!!

Chris and a 'sad' Duncan
Chris has anyone at the local branch got a spare, at the least they should be able to point you in the direction of a local repairer.

Hi eveyone,
Thanks for all your replies and sorry for not responding...but for some reason the website stopped notifying me of new posts.
Duncan now has a new radiator, the headgasket has been checked and he's also got a new radiator cap...
So all should be well...
Thanks again.
Chris :D and Duncan
