I used to like rubber

 ....But now it just annoys me. Every rubber componant I have bought is sub-standard. The quarterlight seals were too large and a pig to fit, the windscreen seal was too large and lets in water through a HUGE gap. The gearbox and engine mounts are hard and cause nasty vibrations. What is it with rubber compounds these days? All these goods had a weird, hard, waxy texture and were very inflexible. I thought rubber compounds had come on in leaps a bounds in the last few years? Certainly tyre technology is galactic in comparison to what it used to be. My bike tyres are truly amazing performers. But bits for Minors seem to create more complaints than satisfied customers. Does anyone know what's going on?

hi
i am glad someone else has complaints regarding in general morris minor componants.
i have not tried modern repro rubbers yet i must admit
as i have got original new old stock, except for my windscreen rubber.
i will try a place in tunbridge wells, it is baines ltd, and have had good reports from them.

Do they do mouldings for moggies then? Or do they produce things to order? As they're just down the road from me, and I will soon be needing some new window seals.

The parts I'm complaining about came from reputable Minor suppliers. :(

When I had the front and rear screen rubbers replaced last year they came from Bull Motif and were fitted without problems.
engine mounts are hard and cause nasty vibrations.
I'm with you on this one Petee. I had severe clutch judder (now taking pills!) last year which caused a split at the exhaust pipe/manifold joint. After eliminating everything except the engine mounts, renewed these (and the exhaust :( ) and since then the judder has stopped but there is annoying vibration which can really only be attributed to the new mounting rubbers. Coincidentally it reduces drastically once everything has warmed up.

The replacement engine mounts are a real problem and the only way to solve it is to try and get hold of some new old stock ones, I was fortunate to get afew and Willie had a pair of me and they solved his problems, and before you ask I dont have any spare ones left sorry.

Agree with you on the quarterlight seals. Did one side, took me ages and it leaked worse than the original!

Didn't bother with the other side

Hmm - the last pair I had didn't even survive fitting the engine without tearing - the opposite extreme, I guess...

That's o.k. Kevin I don't fancy changing them again so soon. I'll wait until the gumshield disintegrates! Or they do.
