Dating an engine

No this isn't one of those agency adverts to find a partner

[I see Cam is asking the same question, well OK, he asked first!]

What do these numbers refer to?

On my '52 Sidevalve:

The first number below number 1 spark plug is: 31693
The second number below number 2 spark plug is: 15 9 52

Nearby there is a Qualcast badge with number 2 beside it.

Looking at all of the original paperwork I see it is noted as Morris Minor Saloon 894-918cc. All other paperwork states 918cc.

1st registered 31.10.1952

I'm wondering if my engine has been replaced at some time.

Chrissie, have a look under the dynamo at the side of the engine and there should be a little plate with the engine number on. If you can let me have this number, I can date the engine (roughly).

*cough* Erm..... well, the thing about lawnmowers is that they are generally sidevalve, and the thing about series MMs is that...............

That of course is NOT an excuse for you modern snazzy overhead valve lot to start taking the mickey, like my mate did when seeing the Qualcast casting on the head. He said "so where do you put the grass box on this thing then!".

Not exactly sure what Mowog stands for. I know that Brummie Longbridge
workers had difficulty in pronouncing it which gave birth to the expression
'Moggy'.
MOWOG Many believe that the first two letters were 'Morris' and the third
and fourth were 'Wolsely' (acquired in the thirties) leaving the fifth, 'G'
to either co-share with the fourth 'O' as 'Organisation', or - more likely,
'Garages', as in Morris Garages, the 'M' being dropped to ease
pronunciation. Weird, as almost everybody else knew the 'whole' as the
Nuffield Organisation, So why MOWOG?

The name MOHOG also appears on some parts any advice on this one?

Well from a brief search online, all I can deduce is that it's "MOrris WOlseley Garages". As for MOHOG my brief research has no mention of it connected with Morris or any other vehicle manufacturer, choices are mainly between a make of guitar or a strange haircut! So as usual I'm no help!
