Tyre pressures - gauge or pencil?

Post by Oldmogman »

Does anyone know which sort of tyre gauge is most accurate: dial or pencil?

I noticed a 3lb difference between my Halfords dial gauge and my Dunlop pencil gauge (both in good condition, not corroded or been dropped).

The different tyre gauges and pumps fitted with gauges I have to hand all give slightly different readings.
For consistency I use a ACCUTIRE digital tyre pressure gauge Model No: MS-4020.
I have used it for my racing slicks and wet tyres for many years as well as my road cars and I have never had reason to question the digital readout.
Last time I used a garage tyre inflator it inflated the tyres just over 5lb above those specified in the car manual and down the road I had to deflate the pressures as the car handled terrible and those garage tyre inflators are supposed to be accurate but they are not - as you will find with most tyre gauges they do vary.
