Parcel shelf ashtrays

Post by Mark Wilson »

I'm getting a bit over-involved in details at the moment, as a distraction from bigger issues elsewhere! I've acquired a pair of the swivel ashtrays which fit under the parcel shelf (not that I've got a parcel shelf yet, or that I would ever let anyone smoke in the car...) I assume the two holes at the front of the metal plate are for fixing to the angle support bar. How far from the ends of the bar should the ashtrays be fixed? Haven't managed to find a photo anywhere yet.

The parcel shelf will have pre drilled, punched holes to accept the ashtray brackets so you can't go wrong when fixing the really.

You say that you wouldn't let anyone smoke in your car now, and neither would I, but Minors come from an era where an awful lot of Minors were smoked in especially the early models. Different days!
I have owned quite a few Minors over the years and because I don't smoke I used to take out the under parcel shelf ash trays in the later cars.
Busy collecting parts for my '52 MM Convertible and 1949 Saloon restorations. :o

When I first got my A30 it had an aroma of ancient smoke that seemed to emanate from the discoloured and very fragile headlining. The previous owner (20 odd years) was a non smoker. Amazing how the smell can persist.
A nice new headlining sorted it out. Now it just smells of old car.

I use the (chrome) ashtray in my Minor. It's perfect for concealing 'emergency' Glacier Mints from Mrs PB :)

I was intending to put parking machine change in the passenger side ashtray and chocolate eclairs in my side..... Suggestions (polite) invited as to what to use the transmission tunnel ashtray for!

In the old days when I was a baccy addict, I never used the ashtrays, always flicked ash out the quarter light, the series 2 steering wheel neatly placed the right hand close to it!
