Refurbishing tired rear vinyl seats

Post by moggiegeek »

Does anyone have any tips for refurbishing the vinyl material of rear seat squabs? It's not so much about cleaning them - sugar soap or vanish but " feeding" the material - I know not a live material like leather.

I just use Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care. It brings it up nicely.

I don't know that you can actually 'feed' vinyl in the same way as leather although, of course, vinyl can eventually dry and crack. The product 'KeithL' mentions may well improve the look of the vinyl....

Hi,
I have tried 'feeding' vinyl with various things in the past, to no avail.
How bad are they?
If the vinyl is still supple you can clean it up and recolour it.
If it is dry and cracked it is past recovery (especially if the stitching is going as well).
Depending on how far gone it actually is you may be able to 'paper over the cracks' (clean it up and recolour it) well enough for it to last the time it takes you to save up and replace it.
If you can afford a replacement set of seat covers now though, save yourself the hassle.
When you do take it apart it would also pay to check out the condition of the support straps under the seat bases, if yours is the type that has them, replacements are available, or you can make your own.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I used this stuff on my light blue vinyl seats that were looking very grubby, they came up really well.

I used vanish soap bars and a soft natural bristle brush on mine, came up a treat.
I replaced all the stuffing and straps on the front seats and cleaned the lot afterwards
