tyre pressure please

Post by stuffedpike20 »

Does anyone know what the tyre pressure should be on the wider wheels?
The tyre size is 165 70 14.
Thanks, John.

I've always used 24psi in my 175's which appear fine!

The sensible approach is to abide by the tyre manufacturers data (for similar tyres on similar rim widths).

Alternatively, simply inflating to the point of fullest contact with the road surface can be found by experiment. It is important that neither wear at the edges nor along the centre line of the tread area takes place preferentially.

You don’t give details of your rim width, so any replies are only a blind guess. Are these van wheels?

Hi John,

I have 165 70 14 tyres on my van wheels, which are on my convertible. After experimenting with various pressures, I'm now running at 28psi all round. I have not found any official guidelines as to the perfect pressures for the rim size/tyre size/car weight etc combinations, if anyone does, I would be very interested as well.

The wider tyres certainly give a firmer (harsher?) ride than the 145's I had on my previous set of standard wheels, but the car feels more planted and the extra tyre width/road contact certainly helps in brisk corners! From a personal point of view, I just think the tyre/wheel combination looks great on the car too.

The tyres on Doris are branded 'Dunlop StreetResponse 2'. I would imagine that other brands give softer or firmer rides - be interesting to hear how you get on with yours, and the pressure you finally go for.

All the best,
Pete

Thanks. I think I will try them at 28 and keep an eye on how they wear.
Thanks everyone.
