Leaky Boot!!!!!!!

Post by biffabacon »

The lower section of my boot area where the spare wheel sits was full of water the other day  . The car is a 59 saloon with the boot seal on the boot lid, this seams to be in good nick, any ideas?

It could be rain coming in via the boot seal or the space between the petrol filler tube and the bodywork.
Alternatively it could be water thrown up by your wheels when driving through puddles and coming in through rust holes in the inner wings if you have them (rust holes that is).

Leak

Check the boot lid hinge gaskets, rubber grommets where rear light/indicator cables pass through inner wing and rubber seals on bumper mounting bars where they pass through body.

First of all, I'd suggest some good size drain holes in the boot floor.
Without those, you may find lots of rusty holes in the boot floor quite quickly. 30 minutes with a 10mm drill can make a Minor last longer!

The leak could be from many places, but I'd check the boot seal itself. If it's on the lid I guess you have one of the squashy foam type. They dont last forever, and can also leak if they get rust/debris pressed into the groove that forms in them.
Unless you see something obvious (eg porous inner wings) you can check the boot seal by folding down the back seat and look at the inside with a torch whilst a friend sprays water around the boot edges (hose pipe /numerous buckets). You may need to take the wooden boot floor out to see the bottom of the boot.

I keep having the same problem, but mine is down to a poorly fitting boot seal.

It keeps jumping off at the top left hand corner, and no matter how I re-position it and make sure that it is not too tight, it keeps coming off.

I might invest in a new seal, but are all the new ones the same quality?

I like the drain hole idea, Ray, I might give that one a go!!

Well, if you saw my Minor's screen seals, you'd understand why I have a few extra drain holes here and there!!
(ps - it's my girlfriends Minor - although I do forget that  My only remaining Minor is in bits )

The drain holes are only a temporary measure as it's important to fix the leaks as soon as possible. However until I fit new screen seals I'd prefer the rear floor pans not to fill up with 2 inches of water... Dripping wet seat belts are not funny.
While I was at it I put drain holes in the sills and the boot floor (taking care to guess the lowest points) - One of the sills was also full of water so that was a stitch in time!
