155 70 14 tyres?

Post by mattyguk1 »

Hi all, I’m looking at tyres and wondered if anybody could tell me are 155 70 14 tyres a good fit for my 1970 saloon?

They will fit and they will function OK but the car will probably perform better with the correct size which, for a radial ply tyre is 145/80/14.
In case you do not know, in simple terms, 145 is the width, 70 is the profile (or the height of the tyre effectively as a % of the width) and 14" is the diameter of the wheel rim of course.
Therefore, a 155 section tyre is a little wide for the wheel - although a lot of Minor owners use them, and a 70 profile is a little low.

Thanks for the reply, I had a new set of 155 14 nankang tyres fitted that I’d purchased from one of the usual Morris minor parts suppliers about 2 years ago which have all split between the tread! I was hoping to get some part used to replace them but there seems to be more options with the 155 70 size ?

i'd go with the 145 bridgestones - changed from 155 a year ago and the look and drive is much better. can be had for about £60 a tyre last time i was looking

I agree with @dudload re the Bridgestones. £62.50 fitted last time I had one.

I fitted 4 new nangkang 155s a few years ago that all cracked between the treads within 6 months of use.
The supplier said they must have been a 'bad batch' and gave me a full refund; but I wonder if all 155 wide tyres would be more likely to split because they are too wide for the rims?

Blockley Tyres (better known for their Vintage-era tyres) make 145 tyres specially for the Minor in that they are as tall as permissible. This means the height of the tyre and therefore the gearing is closer to what it should be. (Many radial tyres are much ‘shorter’ than the equivalent cross ply our cars were originally designed around). Worth considering.

These tyres are starting to worn out, how many do they have on them?

I think you can now get the Pirelli Cinturato in 145R14 too (longstone tyres)
