If it has a zip in the head lining, it was a panda car. Unless someone's stuck a zip on to fool you, or swapped the headlining over, but that seems unlikely. The zip was a specific panda car feature to access the roof lights I believe, though some day it was to stash bribes ;)

The TTA plate was issued in Exeter, and the Police used to purchase in batches, so with just 3 separating them, these two numbers are going to be from the same batch. The zip is one of the best guidelines. What you need for an absolute guarantee is the old style log book showing the first keeper, or the production trace from Gaydon. I'll check the number against known cars later. In the meantime, if the urgency is for buying, then make the offer conditional on the first keeper being the Police.

Would there be any evidence behind the zip of the roof lights plugged up holes or wires maybe.

Check chassis number date against body/engine numbers - some of the late ones had pre-allocated vins!

ie; 6/69 vin, but 6/70 body/engine number
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

I have just seen the car your looking at, advertised. From the pictures it looks a good car / project to have at that money.

Have checked our list of known cars, and this one is not one it - sorry. However, that does not mean that it is not genuine, new ones turn up every year; and this one seems to fit all the requirements, so I suspect that it is genuine.

Behind the zip you would expect to see evidence of holes being filled. You can also look for traces of original paint colour; but a check from Gaydon and/or the first owner will give 100% certainty. Hopefully it will all go smoothly for you, and we'll have another one to add to the register.

Non original engine - were PC cars all LC engines - 514/5?? at a guess, if it isn't need to check o/s/f footwell.
