4.875 Diff and 4.55 Diff for sale

Postby jagnut66 » Mon Apr 27, 2020 9:01 pm

Hi,
I will be advertising these on eBay shortly but just wanted members to have first refusal.
I have two diffs for sale, both will come with the small mounting plate for the brake pipe union.
One is an unusual one:
4.875 (8/39) in good used condition. I have driven this one and have total confidence in it.
I am told they were originally fitted to Austin A35 vans, however this appears to have a date stamped into it: 22/9/54, which is the year of my car but too early for the A35 I believe, so special order maybe? I am told they are desirable and, having looked at the prices they are going for, I would like £175 (or best offer maybe?) for this one.

The other is a standard diff for the 948 Engine: 4.55 (9/41), also in good used condition:

The stamp on this one appears to have a stutter! :P So I counted the teeth on the crown wheel and pinion, to be sure.
Again I have looked at prices and would like £100 for this one.

Postage is the great unknown of course and I will have to look into that before I can comment further, of course I will accept cash on collection, which could be still achieved whilst practising 'social distancing'. If you are interested in either we can discuss your preference.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I think the late A30s had this 4.875:1 ratio, it changed from a 5.125:1 at some point

yes correct. the 5.1 diff was fitted to the very early AS3 from 1951 to 1953. When the A30 started in about Oct 1953, they fitted the 4.8. both ran with the original 803cc engine. (the 1st A series engine).

when the A35 started in Sep 1956, they switched to the 4.5 diff and the 948cc engine.

Hi,
The 4.875 is now sold, so just the 4.55 left.
Best wishes,
Mike.

I would very much like dibs on the 4.55 if I can also source the 948 engine and gearbox.

Long story short, I had everything needed to swap the 1098 into my splitscreen until some total **** nicked my axle and gearbox from my garden. Since I'm buying parts, I may as well make it easier for myself

I am happy for you to have first refusal before it goes on eBay.
I am located in Mansfield, Notts., if you are thinking of the cash on collection option, otherwise I will get a postal price from the Post Office for you.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Hi,
I have just been to the Post Office and the cheapest I could get was Parcelforce 48 at £23.40 (this is insured postage of course).
So I would recommend collection, if anyone decides they are interested and will do on eBay as well when I list it tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Hi Mike,

As much as I appreciate the offer, I have been able to source one locally. Thanks though

That's okay Andy, the postage is a killer but it's a heavy item.
I think it'll be one of the cheaper ones on eBay though.
Best wishes,
Mike.

And I think it'll be a good buy for whoever gets it!
