Four Amal carbs were an option for use with the Arden 8 port head.
As shown in the 'e' bay listing Speedwell also offered a Amal carb conversion on which the carbs offered are based.
The advantage of the Amal carb over the SU carb is that as you open the Amal throttle you increase the size of the choke and therefore the amount of air flow. On full throttle the only intrusion into the air flow is the needle which when raised reduces in size.
When you open the throttle of a SU carb you still have the bottom of the piston and the butterfly/pivot in the way so restricting the air flow.
