Top hat adapter

Postby philthehill » Thu Feb 18, 2021 2:02 pm

I note that the top hat adapter to allow fitment of the Marina hub is now listed on the ESM web site.

This is to fit the marina hub to the standard stub axle?

Correct.
To fit a standard Marina Hub to a standard Minor stub axle.
I was surprised to see the top hat spacer listed because when I spoke with ESM regarding this part post them purchasing the remaining Minor stock from BM they indicated to making them an obsolete part and not list them.

See, I'm learning!

I can't imagine there's many marina hubs around anymore to use for the conversion.

Given how rarely I see a marina anymore I also suspect there's more Minors with Marina hubs than Marinas!

Hi,
There are 368 Morris Marinas left according to this site (once you tally up the 2020 column):

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=moris+marina
Which is a bit of an improvement on 2017, as according to the Daily Telegraph, there was only 294 left at that point.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/galler ... and%201980.
Presumably it must have inspired people to drag some out of their resting places and restore them back to roadworthy condition.
And we can now add the one Danny Hopkins is rescuing / restoring in 'Practical Classics' of course, well done that man! :D
Still not many though.........
Especially when compared to the survival rate of our cars:
And the answer, if you can't be bothered to look it up, is as follows - 4936 (down from 6904 in 1994) registered as "Morris Minor", and 8546 Morris Minor 1000's, (down from 15962 in 1994).9 Nov 2011
That means there was 13,482 in 2011.....
Some must have been dragged out of 'barns' though, as according to 'how many left' there are now 14.2 thousand plus 791 travellers, as of 2020:

https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=morris+minor
Which in English, if I've got this right (ie: 14.2 = 14,200), means there are 14,991 on the road.
Plus some 'tucked away' no doubt......
Good news for us, not so good if you were looking for a Marina as a stablemate......
Best wishes,
Mike.

Marina hubs are not yet a rarity. They are easily available from the likes of 'e' bay.
What is a rarity as regards Marina parts are the parts relating to the later Ital's fitted with tele dampers. Very rarely do those parts come up for sale. After looking for some considerable time and obtained from several different sources I have managed to obtain most of the parts relating to the fitting of tele dampers. The lower damper mounts can be utilised on the Minor & which puts the damper bottom mount over the tie bar bracket. In fact the Marina/Ital front suspension except for the Marina/Ital damper top mount/link and swivel pin can be utilised on the Minor. Works well with the modified J4 metalastic suspension bush.

Thanks for the numbers Mike. I imagine there's more than a couple of hundred Minors wearing Marina hubs.

I must be honest, I've never understood the bashing the Marina recieved. Same with Allegro I suppose

I have a bit of a soft spot for the Marina, my first car was one.
Wonder how many Phil has 'killed off' raiding for parts!

Not enough! 8)

I had the Marina 1.8 estate and the 1.7 Ital estate. The 1.8 was the better of the two.
If I was going to buy a Marina/Ital now it would be the 1.8 TC Coupe.

Have you driven one?
Its the Triumph sourced gearbox that was the worst part of the one I ran for a while!
I must confess that I bought it (sight unseen) to rob for its running gear for my Minor, but when I went to collect it and found it was a 63000 miler in overall really good condition I just had to get it back on the road so I did and sold it on after a while and its still going strong to this day! :D
I sold it about 7 years ago now I think? :-?

Great that ESM are offering the sleeve again though, I only recently approached an engineering workshop to see if they could do me a small batch at a reasonable cost, no point following that up now though if they are an off the shelf item :D
Thanks for the heads up Phil :D

No I've never had the chance actually. Funny you should mention Triumph, I briefly run a dolomite for a company car for a little while. Loved it
