blown gasket

Post by XDB »

I\\\'m having a look at a 1098 minor with a blown head gasket tomorrow. The head is not the original one but is a 202. If I have it skimmed is there an optimum size I can go down to. I suspect it may have been skimmed before.

The compression on the 1098 engine is too low anyway. Im not sure what the most you can skim off, but 1g202 heads aren;t in short supply

I have one which we skimmed 120 thou (about 40 years ago!) and although it hasn't hit the oil gallery, the 'deck' is so thin in places it moves when I press it with my finger! We decided not to use it. So - realistically - 80 thou is about the safe maximum, 100 if you feel lucky.

I use simple cheap gaskets -and never have any problems. The 'Payen' thing is grossly overstated!

Yep - that's about the right price to pay! But i've used copper both sides/copper one side/steel both sides/steel on one side and not had any problems.
