Gearbox tunnel cover

Post by psjorge »

Hi,

Here am I again looking for the experts in originality!

The question I'm about to post here has been already posted previously by myself on the Bodywork section of the forum but, due to the lack of interest it atracted, I'm posting it here, hoping that the "originality" people may be more enthusiastic!

The thing is: was there a specific gearbox tunnel cover for LHD cars? If not, how was this issue solved by the factory?

The first assumption one makes is to think that LHD covers were the mirror image of the RHD ones. However, looking at catalogs of several suppliers I came across no reference of a LHD gearbox tunnel cover!

On the other hand, the one that is in fact fitted to my car is not like that. It's the same as a RHD one and has a metal plate soldered to it so as to cover what should be the master cilinder's cover. And the soldering is really scruffy, not at all looking as if it was factory made, which led me to think that there should have been a more elegant solution originally.

Obviously I do have the option of making a mirror cover from a RHD one but I don't want to take all that trouble just to find out later that the original solution was different...

Anyone can clear this for me?

For sure there is a LHD version of the tunnel... Have you tried any suppliers in USA?

Take a look at the ESM site.

I took a look at ESM and they do not have it. At least not on the on-line catalog...

In the meantime, I've underestimated the guys from the Bodywork section because I recieved a very precise answer in the meantime! Generaly speaking the LHD covers were mirrors of the RHD ones, the only differences concern the fact that the pedals were not exactly on the same opposing position so some slight differencies were necessary to acomodate them.

In conclusion... I'll make a LHD out of an RHD!

Pedro
