Woodwork discolouration

Post by Peetee »

I am sanding down the wood on the traveller and the varnish is coming away well but there dark blotchy staining in places which I believe is fungal in cause. The car had been dry stored for 30 years and arrived in my garage dry and there is no sign of softness in the wood so I don't think there is any danger that it's recent contamination. Can anyone reccommend a treatment to remove this discolouration?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

Officially - the recommendation is Oxalic Acid I believe - but the lemon juice (Citric Acid) sounds good! Then Cuprinol 5 Star wood treatment - I gave mine loads of this ! Make sure the drain holes under the side windows stay clear.

lemon juice has been used in the trade for many years

it is a lot kinder to the fibres of the timber

and the best protection you can give the wood is woodguard, it is the best preservative for timber, then you can apply what ever finish you want

Yacht chandlers sell a product based on oxalic acid which is very effective. Alternatively, E-bay lists quite a few products:

lemon is cheaper and it does work
try it first then if you find it does not work then spends pounds on chemicals and destroying the cell structure of the timber
why is everyone so obsessed with these chemicals
