Please Help.

Post by beal1982 »

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help?
My partner who owns a morris minor has gone to our caravan in kent for a few days, the car made the 200 mile journey no problems and was getting along lovely, then on friday afternoon the fuel pump has ceased to work. My partner was towed back to our caravan site in Deal, however, he is now struggling to get a new fuel pump anywhere locally so is stuck in kent untill he can get a part. Does anyone know of any local stockists that we may not have heard of that he can try in desperation today? He has tried Canterbury convertibles but cannot get hold of anyone, i've even tried to get the part in oxfordshire where i am this morning in order to take it down to him so he can repair it, however i cannot get hold of one today either. :( If anyone knows of any places or people that may be able to help, your message would be greatly appriciated.

Many Thanks

Charlotte :(

Has it definitely broke, has your partner tried to clean the points? They are quite reliable just need a helping hand/clout with hammer/clean (delete as appropriate) now and again.

Hi Dean

I think he was just planning to change it because it was almost easier to do than fidle around with it if you don't have all your tools to hand. I think he is going to try those methods you suggested today as a last attempt to get it going without the new part to hand. Thank you for your suggestions i will pass them on to him, however, i think he is quite frustrated by the lack of parts availible so brute force with a hammer may not be a good option today!!!!!! :)

Again thank you for your suggestions

No tools required fotr this - With the end cap removed just pull some paper through the points as you hold the points closed, then spray a LITTLE bit of WD40 at the pivot points of the points (if you see what I mean - the outboard edge where the pivot on the bracket). Make sure also that the live (the wire that screws onto the pump after the cap) is clean and making good contact. It is very rare for a pump to fail so completely that you can't get it going again.....

Hi Charlotte,

Good idea to post here and I hope your partner gets the car going again soon.

I'm assuming you'll have thought of ESM? Not sure if they are open on a Saturday afternoon but they will be there on Monday morning, if things are still looking desperate.

It's definitely the fuel pump, is it, not something amiss with the carb?

Let us know how you get on!

As above - just clean the points - a nail file/emery board will do it easily. Don't be tempted to buy an 'electronic' replacement pump - if you do buy one - just get the standard unit. But cleaning the points should fix it meantime - If of course that is the problem ? What are the symptoms ? Is the pump silent - doing nothing - or is it chattering away 16 to the dozen ? If silent - does it go (even just one or two clicks) with a tap on the side with a hammer ? New points are inexpensive and not difficult to fit - consider that once you get the car home.

I live quite close to Deal and I might be able to help out on Monday as I will be in Sandwich on Monday. Which is only about five miles from Deal.

Interesting! I wondered if they still existed - my Traveller came with various receipts for fairly major work done there at one time.

To the OP, PM me details of where the car is and a mobile number. I can help you this afternoon if your partner is still stranded in Deal. I have spare fuel pumps and points and tools and the knowledge, and the time today to help a fellow moggyist out.

It would have been nice for the 'PLEASE HELP' person to at least have acknowledged ' CJ,s'
kind offer of help, even if they had got the problem sorted.

No worries! Just glad that your partner made it home! They had good weather while they were down, it has got colder here this week and rainy. Maybe you could come down in September and join us at the regional Kent branches Hop rally?? http://www.kenthop.co.uk

BTW, I am happy to help any Minorist out if they venture down this way to the wilds of East Kent and have problems. I'm the sort of person that likes helping people and I love getting under the bonnet and fixing things! Plus I have a stock of spares.

Good to hear the Minor got home ok, we like a happy ending.
Hope the criticism didn't offend.
Nice to know there are folk out there willing to go the extra mile though.
