great series of shots there, plenty of detail and nice and sharp too, facinating to anyone watching this, either will get some one to look for a project or spur on those that already have one.

Thanks David, we have approached the same project from different directions but at the end of the day 2 pickups will live to fight another day. I had not realized how rusty this pickup was, once complete, being honest, there wont be much of the original left. But the journey is interesting, obtaining a new old stock side that had somehow found its way to Malta then got shipped back and fitted just gives me a warm glow inside. Eldest daughter doing masters in Sussex and Motherinlaw lives in Woodingdean so may pop by on one of our trips. :D

Thanks.
Rich Legg has sent some more pictures, starting to go back together.
Really ompressed with the shotblasting and the powder coating he is getting done.
Back axle case was rusted through in places and needed repairing!

Pleased he got the chassis powder coated aswell.

immaculate, this is going to be like a pickup right out of the Longbridge works. One thing I noticed was the master cylinder bolts, i'm going to be working in that area soon, is it best to have the nuts on the inside of the chassis or the outside, I know they were build nuts inside, but does this make it difficult to dismantle with the torsion bar in the way of the bolts?
Nice to see reflections in that lovely new chassis.

some people say that it's fine the standard way, and you can move the torsion bar out of the way with a G clamp, but i dont like the idea of that!

you can see that the heads of the bolts are thinned right down, so there must have been cause for them to do that. what i've done in the past is, when re-fitting the bolts, put them in the wrong way around with the nut by the torsion bar, and thin it down. taking a bit off the end of the thread, and thinning the nut too.

some people say 'just turn the bolts around, if you get a witness mark on the torsion bar after a few miles, then trim', i think that some torsion bars deflect inward as they twist, and will hit, others deflect outward, or up, or down, and aren't an issue!

It's a good idea, but how strong is the lock if you've thinned the nut and thread, with no room for a spring washer or lock nut? You don't want these nuts working loose and the bolts falling out.
If they're the correct way they won't slip out - ever.

that's a good point, i think my nuts are firmly rusted on now anyway! i suppose a dab of locktite couldn't hurt things.

Thats one thing I keep standard. Its really easy to pull the torsion bar out of the way anyway

A few pictures from Rich Legg
Here are a few photos from Monday morning at the painters, with the shell in Primer.
He's got some photos of it when he was stripping the paint, and some of it in Etch Primer. I'll get those from him on a disc.

Since the photos it's now got a guide coat, which he'll sand through to reveal any low points, then it's another coat of high build primer, and then a few coats of 2k top coat.

beautiful, and what a perfect little dolly, just the right size for a stripped down pickup cab. I could have well done with these images when I was starting on my pickup project. They say a picture tells a thousand words, but a well exposed, sharp image tells many more.

The shell has been seam sealed with seam sealer, and Shalts, which is a really good hardwearing sealer. It's not as pretty as brushed seam sealer, but it gives much much better protection, being as it's going to get a lot of use I thought that would be best. The inner wings have all been stone chipped with the same.

The shell has been block sanded, and had another coat of high build primmer. It's now got a guide coat (the black dusting over the primer you can see in the photos), which when block sanded will show any low points. So it will now be block sanded, then a coat of color and another coat after that has dried. Should be back in my workshop Saturday.

The top of the tailgate is Stainless Steel, so I've highly polished it with 3 different grade polishing wheels, so that if it ever gets scratched while you're putting things in the back it won't show. If it's a bad scratch you can just get it re-polished.
