Reasonable budget

Post by jamface »

Hi

I've decided to sell my MG and buy a minor instead as a daily driver, do you think £2000 is a reasonable budget? I've looked around and the prices seem to vary wildly for a decent one with no serious rust and a decent amount of MOT left on it. If £2000 isn't realistic I may just keep the MG for a while until I can scrape together some more cash.

Any advice would be great!

£2000 will get you a nice presentable 1098cc saloon from a private seller. It may need the odd job doing but nothing serious. Interestingly, good 4dr's seem easier to find now as more and more 2dr's are getting their roofs chopped off by specialists and then resold for £5000 as a Converted Convertible (nothing wrong with this, reputable specialists have been doing it for years). As a result, dealers are now charging £3500+ for nice original 2dr saloons.

or £2000 will buy you an MOT'd Traveller needing woodwork or a genuine convertible project needing full welding.
Hence I am still looking after a year.

Here's an example from our own forum, nice honest 2dr, near your budget or do a deal with your MG, s/he's looking for another classic in PX. Bit of rust on the boot lid and an awful Benneton / Simon Says steering wheel, just typical of the jobs you expect on a £2500 minor.

The top priority is lack of RUST - and a brand new MOT certificate. And yes - check cars for sale on this forum, although the new format means there is no discussion allowed in that section - but nothing to stop you asking in this section for comment on a particular car. Check the number of 'posts' against the seller - if only a few - then I suggest they are only on here to sell the car, and perhaps not a long-term Minor enthusiast....

If you edit your personal profile to add your location, it may be possible for a forum or club member to come along with you to view possible cars and advise on whether what you are looking at is a sound buy :-)

Okay, so I've updated my profile to show I'm in Devon in the hope there's lots of Devon based enthusiasts!

I did contact the guy about the possible swap and I'm going to send him some pics of my MG, the problem is that he is based way oop north so I'm not sure how that would work.

I'm good at checking for rust as I've had a KA and an MG and am adept at wriggling under cars, however I know about very little other than rust.

There's a car auction at the end of the month with 2 minors going up, both about my price range but I'm not sure what the issues are with buying cars at auction other than getting carried away and bidding too much (this would not be a problem for me as I have £2000 to the penny and not a penny more).
