Split-Screen Re=Chroming?

Post by LucyBuchanan »

I am restoring a 1956 Split-Screen Traveller. The centre pillar of the windscreen is badly pitted and slightly rusty. Is this a part I can buy new anywhere? If not, could anyone recommend where I can get it re-chromed. I will also need to re-chrome the front and rear bumpers. I live in West Wales. Thanks.

They are available new as well, I have found the new pillars to be a bad fit though. The bumpers blades usually fit ok. Most minors specialist will sell them but do shop around as prices vary.

I also have a split screen traveller, have you put the details for yours on the register? This is so we know how many are left as the split screen traveller is now a rarity. Contact Phil, MBO145 via the messageboard.

Centre pillar needs re-profiling at both ends to give a better fit over the trim connecting pieces. If you are re-using the original screws rather than the nuts supplied, you will have to trim the studs to suit otherwise they will bottom out.
Bumper chrome is very variable - best I found was Birmingham Minor Centre. I had to send others back due to a shocking standard.

Hi there!
As David said I have a series 2 traveller too! Mine is a bit earlier than David's, being made in Feb 1956.
I did get my centre screen pillar re-chromed, it was very pitted as the metal they made them from isn't that good, but it has been done for 8 years now and still looks really good, the chrome chap said he ground it back to smooth it and then plated it in brass then in chrome, it cost a bit more than a new one, but was easier to fit back in, mind you fitting the screen back in is tricky, took 4 of us an afternoon!
Any more tips you need, let me or David know and we will help if we can, would be nice to see pictures!
I will be taking over the series 2 traveller register soon, so please stay in touch!

My 1956 Series 11 Traveller! Bought when I was 17 (1985)....sold 6 years (1991) later......bought back 9 years after that! (2000) With 6 different owners in the middle, what a lucky boy I am!
