Ignition bits, original fittings. Advice needed.

Post by peteatreat »

Hi,
Please could I have some help with regard to the correct type of ignition items that would have originally been fitted to a 1950 sidevalve.
What type of dizzy cap, leads and plug connectors is what I would like to know.
Thank you.
Pete.

DKYH4A side entry distributor cap, black copper core HT leads with brass eye ends secured with spark plug caps.
The coil lead is attached to the black coil with a brass split washer and "acorn" cap
I use a top entry distributor cap, HT leads secured by "acorn" caps and vertical spark plug caps

Thanks for the reply Mike.
From the info you have provided, I am happy with the dizzy cap and black HT leads which are in situ.
What I can't picture in my mind are the connections to the plugs and the coil. Please would it be possible to guide me to some photos that may be on the net with the correct fittings or some other images that will give me a clue to what it looks like.
Thanks again.
Pete.

I would recommend a copy of "Original Morris Minor" by Ray Newell, it has a good selection of photos of fixtures and fittings on Minors

Hello Pete,
Only just seen this post.
If you can wait until I get home, tonight, I can post up pictures of my sidevalve engine, with original side-entry dizzy cap.
The only mods on this one are the "electronic ignition" module fitted inside the cap.
Or you can see some of the connections etc., in this topic

Hi
Thank you for your replies on this subject. I have obtained the plug connectors and almost ready to convert back to original spec. I have noticed from the 'Original Morris Minor' publication (thanks Mike for the tip), that there seems to be a 'sleeve' or is it black electrical tape attached to the plug end of the HT lead?

Hope you can see what I mean from the photos below.

Please could I have some advice on this and if it is a purchasable item, where I can get them.

Thank you.

I would think that it is an insulating sleeve that covers were the connector is cramped onto the lead

and the copper nuts, where to find?
and the rings, they are not standard, they need a small hole, and a bigger hole, for the ignition cable, nice to have it ;)
with a standard crimping tool it is not a problem.
