Door catch repair

Post by GavinL »

The 'detent' Spring on my door catch is broken, any suggestions on how to repair? I'm toying with fitting a piece of Spring steel across the top with a rivet or similar to sit in the recess in the catch.

don't think I would trust a repair on a door catch, could cause a problem if it failed and the door flew open,I would be looking for a second hand one ,must be plenty about. But suppose if repair done to your satisfaction then fair enough.

Thats a common problem, there's a chap in Germany if I remember right that is making the springs, I bought a couple off of him to replace mine. I will look the details up for you and post them later on.

So as an update I contacted Paul Parts, and they sent me a pair of springs by return, which arrived from Austria in a couple of days.

Thank goodness that someone is making them - every door catch that I've ever removed has had that broken spring. Just to clarify the safety side, the spring holds the interior lever in place and stops it rattling about, but does not affect the operation of the door lock - the handle is a remote control operated by a long flat bar; so that broken spring does not increase the risk of a door flying open.

Is it possible to replace the spring in the lock that 'pushes' the brass lock catch into the catch plate on the door pillar? I assume that the same spring returns the inside door handle to the forward position?

Yes, the bolt assembly for want of a better word comes apart, but is held by the pin that goes to the operating rod. The pin is riveted to the bolt, I just turned a new one up.

Glad you found a supplier. Just for reference, these people

http://www.albertasprings.co.uk/

have made unobtainable springs for me. They are friendly, reasonably priced considering they are one-offs, and prompt. They wanted to know what my example spring was off so they could make another for someone who didn't have an example.

Regards

Ian
