Equivilent liquid to add to the interiors factory sound proofing?

Postby Chief » Fri Jul 06, 2018 10:14 am

Hi,
Over the years with various areas being welded I've lost areas of the interior factory-original sound proofing material (I presume it's bitumen?).

Since the material once covered the floors from the front right the way to the back through the box section and up under the rear seat as one continous sheet I presume the original was a liquid you poured on and then allowed to set (it's approx. 1/2 - 1cm thick and then painted with the cars colour).

I just wondered if anyone knew of a replacement that could be used in conjunction with the areas that still exist? Do the concours owners use anything to give a factory finish to their cars?
I'd be wanting to also paint over it to match the original.

I know there are bitumen paints that create a thin 2mm layer and pads as well but many of the bitumen paints I read about melt in heat and would take out the carpets and the pads are only meant for small sections, not to cover large areas with.

Thanks.

To achieve the factory finish you would need to use stonechip with a contoured finish, then cover with colour. The downside would be the need to remove whatever is there now. If it's up to a centimetre thick I can't see it being the original covering, which is more like 2mm.

I agree with Les that I've never seen anything upto 1cm deep that was factory supplied and painted over. My own very original car has a surface just like the one Les has pictured which I'm sure would have been sprayed on when the car was new and could be best replicated by a "stone chip" material.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.

I can't believe I forgot about the existence of stone chip paint. I think that would be perfect.

I admit the depth was a guess from looking at it, now on actually measuring it I see it is indeed around 2mm. Somehow it looked so much deeper.

I forgot to ask:

Do you have a recommendation for which stone chip paint to use since there are so many brands to choose from and ideally a brushable variety would be best.

Thanks.

I can't recall the make of stonechip I used but the container was orangey red. It was an aerosol, which I suggest would be better for getting that contoured effect. On reflection I'm pretty sure it was a Hammerite product.
