Wolseley 1500 brakes

Wolseley 1500 front brake parts wanted, drums and backplate or more. I believe the hubs are the same as Minor, thanks.

A pair on 'e' bay but not cheap but I consider them a fair price as they do not come up for sale very often - also a cheaper way of increasing brake efficiency than fitting a disk brake kit and no servo required either.

If you can find a set - fit Wolseley 1500 rear brakes to get the balance right.

Unfortunately the swivels are not suitable for the Minor as the steering arm is in the upper boss (Wolseley/Riley) with no hole in the lower boss (Minor). The seals look to be very good so I suspect that the swivels are good - therefore you might be able to sell the swivel on to a Wolseley/Riley owner and get some of your money back.

Phil. Doesn't the Wolseley steering arm place the track rod end in the same place as the Minor due to a different shaped arm? I've never had one so can't tell for certain.

The Wolseley 1500 /Riley 1.5 steering arms are both fitted in the top hole/boss of the steering swivel.

The Wolseley 1500/Riley 1.5 steering arms may be a different shape as they have different part numbers (R/H BTA162 - L/H BTA163).

The Minor steering arms are (R/H BTA106 - L/H BTA107) and are fitted into the lower boss/hole.

The reason I believe for the alternative arrangements/arms/holes is that the rack is placed higher in/on the body to clear the larger Wolseley/Riley gearbox bell housing.

BMC latterly produced only one type of steering swivel (discounting the Minor 8cwt van which had a thicker steering arm) suitable for the Wolseley 1500/Riley 1.5 & Minor & which had two steering arm holes in the swivel so as to be able to be fitted to any of the three as per the link below:-

The swivels on the link look like minor hubs to me. I am 99%sure they are not wolseley items. The drums are a different shape and the adjustment hole are not that close to the outside edge.

Having investigated further I believe you are right - the swivel is Wolseley 1500/Riley 1.5 but the drum/back plate is not Wolseley 1500/Riley 1.5. possibly Minor 7" set up.

I cannot understand why anyone would want to fit smaller brakes to the Wolseley. The seller has other Wolseley 1500 parts for sale so they may all have come from the same vehicle.

This may be a better buy:

At least you would get the correct 9" Wolseley 1500 front brakes, the 8" Wolseley 1500 rear brakes and the better 3.9 rear axle ratio.

in January I fitted midget disks, the hubs and disks cost £40 for the pair off eBay, the calipers and pads were also £40 the pair. I made the 10 mm thick caliper brackets using a drawing which had been posted by Isliminor. The brakes were good but required a lot of leg pressure so I fitted a servo (£75 off eBay) connected to the front and back. The brakes are now well balanced and have plenty of feel. The total cost was £180 and all parts are available new.

I want to avoid a servo as they look a pain to fit in that small area, also getting in the way the oil pressure line / distributor / remote brake fluid line and air intake filter I've fitted. I'd fit the Midget brake system if it was the same as standard peddle pressure but not worse. :-?
There is a Ford kit on *bay for £300 using minor hubs with longer studs, but I could have the same issue without a servo. Also heavy steering with the wheels out another 1/2" each side, anyone fitted one of these?.

@ philthehill , Would the Riley steel wheels be ok for a Morris 1000? they look wider and the same stud pattern.

Riley 1.5, Wolseley 1500 and Minor 1000 all used exactly the same wheels.
The only difference in specification is that originally the Riley and Wolseley were supplied with larger tyres.
One oddity is that because of the different steering arm fitted to the Riley/Wolseley, you cannot fit the 4.5" Minor 8cwt van rim to those models without the tyre fouling the steering arm - I guess a spacer would cure this but I never fancied using spacers.

I always thought the Riley 1.5 had 4 or 4.5 inch rims as standard whilst the W1500 had the Minor 3 inch ones. Learn something new every day! :D

I was thinking i had spotted a way to get wider wheels with the same stud pattern, I regret giving away the slot mags years ago that were from a moggy.
