Rear shelf

Postby scutter » Mon Feb 11, 2019 10:32 am

Folks,

It's been a long time since I stripped down the Morris and I can't remember what covers the rear parcel shelf behind the seats.

Would anyone be kind enough to post a picture of the rear area!

Many Thanks Dan.

There's normally a thin board covered in a vinyl materal to complement the other trim. What year is your car, just to check for any variation?

Didn't know that a vinyl board was ever fitted! Mine certainly never had one.

I think that refers to the finisher piece below the window for the headlining ?

The plain painted steel shelf probably lasted until late 1964 when the heat-formed interior trim came in. At that time the rear seat upright changed shape and became much lower (which makes fitting rear seat belts much easier!) and the rear shelf much more visible and exposed.
A vinyl trimmed board was then laid flat on the shelf to cover the steel. No doubt Newton Commercial produce this if required?

Thank you gents, mine's a late 59 car. I may make a board up to see what it looks like.

I'll post some photos in the projects page when i get time.

My Minor of that age has just a plain steel shelf - although you hardly ever see it. This made it easier to install the rear seat belts which have the inertia reels mounted inside the boot and the material feeds through slots cut into the metal shelf. It would be harder to do on a later car with a trim panel to cut through as well.

Mine is a convertible which is somewhat different but here's how the shelf looks.
