Engine beather

Post by biomed32uk »

I am playing about with the breathing on the car, and gathering all the parts to make it closed circuit.

Part of that is the oil trap that goes on the tappet chest, so I need to make it serviceable, thought it was OK but the wirewool inside is breaking up.

So I have worked out the the outer diameter of the tin in really close to that of 1.5" BSP, and that a piece of 1.5 BSP pipe with a thread on and then turned down will fit down inside the tin really nicely, suitably soldered in.

I can then use a threaded cap with a hose barb on to attach the pipe, I then have a breather trap that can be serviced.

I will post some photos as it progresses, so far just the trap with the end cut off.

May be of use or interest to others.

Use stainless steel pan scrubs to fill the oil separator can otherwise the mesh ends up like below.

Yes seen your tip on those, the mesh in my one is no where near that bad yet, but on its way and the clip is well on the way to breaking as well.

Keep you posted how the screw on top works out.

In my ramshackle PCV system (using a clear plastic water catch can, as used in paint guns), I've used copper wool. Doesn't rust, corrode, or degrade in any way. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Scotch-Brite-C ... SwhWFcodq~

Those items appear to be only available in the States unless someone on here knows of a UK source other than over the pond 'e' bay.

I note that they are only copper coated so will continue with the stainless steel version.

Well plan 'a' had mixed success, the top worked an absolute treat, but the breather assembly was off of a mini. It leaves the side cover at quite an angle, on a mini the bottom hose as it leaves the water pump kicks down quickly to meet the rad, on the minor it obviously does not, there was no way it was fitting in that form, completely fouled by the bottom hose. I thought there would be just enough room but I was wrong.

So dismantled it, it's brazed together.

Using a spare side cover I made a 28mm inward flared hold in it, and using a piece of 28mm exhaust pipe, and a sleeve to fit the 32mm hole in the canister - after brazing it together the item below emerged from the workshop.
