Rear shelf
Folks,
It's been a long time since I stripped down the Morris and I can't remember what covers the rear parcel shelf behind the seats.
Would anyone be kind enough to post a picture of the rear area!
Many Thanks Dan.

Re: Rear shelf
There's normally a thin board covered in a vinyl materal to complement the other trim. What year is your car, just to check for any variation?

Re: Rear shelf
Didn't know that a vinyl board was ever fitted! Mine certainly never had one.

Re: Rear shelf
I think that refers to the finisher piece below the window for the headlining ?

Re: Rear shelf
The plain painted steel shelf probably lasted until late 1964 when the heat-formed interior trim came in. At that time the rear seat upright changed shape and became much lower (which makes fitting rear seat belts much easier!) and the rear shelf much more visible and exposed.
A vinyl trimmed board was then laid flat on the shelf to cover the steel. No doubt Newton Commercial produce this if required?

Re: Rear shelf
Thank you gents, mine's a late 59 car. I may make a board up to see what it looks like.
I'll post some photos in the projects page when i get time.

Re: Rear shelf
My Minor of that age has just a plain steel shelf - although you hardly ever see it. This made it easier to install the rear seat belts which have the inertia reels mounted inside the boot and the material feeds through slots cut into the metal shelf. It would be harder to do on a later car with a trim panel to cut through as well.

Re: Rear shelf
Just spotted this topic, so thought I'd add to it.
Basil is a '55 series II and the shelf appears to be very thick cardboard; for some unearthly reason which I cannot fathom out, there a fastener post in the centre, like the sort of thing you might see on a open top sports motor....
Anyone got any idea what it might have been for?

Re: Rear shelf
That is part of a 'lift-the-dot' fastener, used on older cars. It is fixed into the rear parcel shelf by a nut underneath, I believe, and the rear seat had a flap of leather with a tab fixed to it, which clips over the protruding pin that we see in your photo, thus securing the rear seat backrest. When this fastener is unclipped, you can lower/remove the seat backrest to gain access to the boot space from inside the car

Re: Rear shelf
Many thanks
I suspect when it's been recovered in the past the strap has been missed off. ...
I've just been out and looked and the seat back is screwed in place from within the boot.

Re: Rear shelf
Most times the leather strap rots over time, breaks, and the part that clips over the stud is lost. The then owner decides to screw the seat back in place as a quick fix. I made a new leather strap for mine (which is screwed into the rear of the back seat - you may find a clue to the original strap fitting there....) You can restore yours if you can cut a suitable length of strap and then: https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/category/58/lift-the-dot

Re: Rear shelf
From the looks of it, just one of the things that were bodged on the restoration which was carried out about 20 years ago. The same brass screws and cup washers as were used on the door cards instead of the proper clips.myoldjalopy wrote: ↑Wed May 22, 2019 11:47 pm

So another thing for the list of jobs.

Re: Rear shelf
Oh well, at least you can use one of the screws and cup washers to fit the strap to the seat back!
