Self stirring left and right

Post by EYV65 »

My minor literally stirs itself, it wondered left and you adjust it slightly then it wondered right, as if its wobbling. It only happens over 30mph... What could this be? Any ideas

Thanks

Start by checking the simple stuff, tyres, tracking, check the joints and nuts and bolts for tightness through the mechanism. Examine the swivels and trunnions. Finally the steering rack.

Also check that the front shock absorbers are tightly bolted to the bulkhead. Are there any noises such as knocks?

Get an MOT from a classic friendly garage. Well worth the money, and they’ll put you right. You can’t mess around with dodgy steering or brakes.

Can it do this? it was an advisory on the MOT saying that there was significant wear! Seeing ive just purchased the vehicle, i didnt know or even think that it could make the it wobble or swing?

Everything has been checked and it all seems good and tight.

get underneath and examine .very closely the REAR axle mountings, Ubolts and spring shackles, its not unknown for the axle to be insecure and move about causing weird steering issues

There is something seriously wrong with a Morris Minor which doesn't steer properly. Have you actually had the tracking (wheel alignment) checked properly? Tyres checked properly? Are the trunnion joints all moving freely? As Kennatt has suggested it is also worth looking at the rear of the car too. If the MOT tester advised that there was a steering rack problem, then get it sorted! The steering is one of the Minors best features and a good car on good tyres should steer like a dream :) .
I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it but if you can't check it yourself you need to take it to a garage with some experience of these cars.

IMHO the tracking needs adjusting.
It the car wanders to one side or the other the front wheels are toeing out too much.
If the car keeps to a straight path without adjusting the steering wheel the wheels are toeing in too much.
