5.90 tyres
I acquired a set of 5.90-14 crossply tyres, is it safe to fit them to the standard Minor wheels? I know the correct size is 5.00/5.20-14.

Re: 5.90 tyres
It seems a shame to waste them doesn't it. Most people would probably say that a 590 section tyre is too big for the standard Minor rim. As you say, the standard fit was a 500 or 520. However, the Wolseley 1500 and Riley 1.5 which used the same wheel rim was supplied new with 560 /14 tyres so there was always scope for a slightly larger tyre........

One size up might be acceptable, but your insurance company may think differently, in the case of a claim. Best to enquire to them, not on a forum where all sorts of opinions might turn up.

I don't give a toss about opinion, it's facts that I pay attention to. Thank you ManyMinors, 5.90 are only .30" wider than 5.60 I will fit them and see.

Re: 5.90 tyres
Geoffrey,
You may not give a toss. So why ask the question on the forum, in that case? It seems you had clearly already decided to use these rims unless there was extreme warnings to the contrary.
You might note that perhaps Wolseley and Riley had already used up the scope for a slightly wider tyre on that rim? I still advise that you get some facts from a reliable source before possibly nullifying your insurance policy - at least the third party would still be covered, I suppose.

Re: 5.90 tyres
I bought them thinking the size was 5.20, it turns out my eyes got it wrong and the 2 is a 9. Plenty of drivers fit 155 section radials, which are wider than the old 5.90 crossplies.

Re: 5.90 tyres
The table below is compiled from various sources and gives a good guide to suitable matching of tyre sizes with rim widths.
The point about needing to inform your insurance company about any change away from the standard specification is very valid indeed.
The only experience I have of mismatched tyres is a friend many years ago, who fitted 155R13 tyres to 13" x 5.5" rims and they were awful. The car skittered around with poor control. Only 1 size too small, but the effect was very obvious. The point about needing to inform your insurance company about any change away from the standard specification is very valid indeed.

Re: 5.90 tyres
Interesting, 5.90 is the optimal size for van wheels.

Re: 5.90 tyres
Next question is: Why did they use wider rims on the vans? Or conversely, why they did not use standard saloon rims on the vans.
There should be a simple answer to a simple question. Or, if not, one part of the answer should address your initial query.

Personally, I would expect it to be related to the load carrying capability. All up weight of a loaded van compared with the all up weight of a car inc 4 people and luggage.oliver90owner wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:57 am Next question is: Why did they use wider rims on the vans? Didn't the van have even beefier springs than the Traveller?

Re: 5.90 tyres
They did. The standard van (originally 5cwt and later 6cwt) was supplied with the same rims as the standard car.oliver90owner wrote: ↑Sat Sep 14, 2019 10:57 am Or conversely, why they did not use standard saloon rims on the vans.
From 1968 there was the option of an uprated 8cwt version of the van and pick-up and these were supplied with some uprated steering and suspension components plus the wider wheels and tyres. The wider wheels were not offered as a factory option on the car although they could be purchased separately of course aftermarket.

Re: 5.90 tyres
Next question for MM.
What tyres were fitted to the narrow rims? I suspect they were not 5.90 section.

Re: 5.90 tyres
As stated in his first post, the owner is aware that 500x14 and later, 520-14 were fitted to the cars originally.
