Steering Rack

Post by alawrence10360 »

https://www.morrisminor.org.uk/parts/32-steering-rack

Looking at this link from Charles Ware there is a steering rack STR 101R
and another STR101E 57 onwards
I spoke to a guy there who said the for a later model the first one is for the later models (I have a 67 ) however that doesnt make sence to me given the description
Has anybody used one ?

I would normally go for ESM as you suggest however the surcharge is £20 more than Charles Ware
All being well I will get it back I know but still...

Fair enough, I mentioned it because you generally get the right thing from them. In my book that comes first.
Maybe check with CW again and tell them there is a doubt, and to verify.

Well quite simply I'd firmly ask them to explain, since what they are telling you is contrary to the website descriptions.
Wouldn't be the first time a website has had an incorrect description applied.

In fact, I'd ask them by email so that you have the response in writing, which you can challenge them mover if it's wrong later.

Just got around to fitting the recon rack from ESM and when checking the operation through its full travel from the wheels whilst on the stands I felt that it wasnt as smooth as the one I had taken off
Realised I had not filled it with oil !
Pleade tell me its possible to fill it whilst in situ as it was a nightmare fitting it back on my own

A nipple is accessible through a hole in the floor at rack level, on the nearside. Assuming there is no oil already in the rack, I think it is 10 strokes of the gun ( check that though) Some people use grease but I’m not sure if that is right, I’d use oil. Anyhow no need to remove rack.

use a ball joint splitter.
a recon rack is so cheap its a no brainer.
check if its lubricated BEFORE you refit.
get a mate to be in the car to get the four off fixing bolts off.
otherwise it appears to be the easiest job i have done. its not finished yet however...

if ep90 is the correct lubricant do you use a grease gun to get it in ?

Yes, as it needs to attach to the nipple.

I use one of these to oil the rack via the steering nipple: https://www.frost.co.uk/hp-push-type-oil-gun/
It does the job but leaks a bit while in storage so I keep it in a polythene bag.

I also use the oil gun same as Myoldjalopy's. I think that the manual states 10 pumps when servicing. After replacing a gator, I gave it 10 pumps then left it for a bit then kept repeating until I got a small drip from a rubber gator.

"do you need to remove the normal type grease nipple to use one of these guns ?" No, the gun fits straight over the nipple. Pity it is out of stock but there must be others on the market - you'd think so, anyway. I think you could use a grease gun to pump the oil but clean all the grease out first.........urggh, a messy job, no doubt.........however, given that some folks grease the steering rack anyway, a bit of grease mixed with the oil can't do any harm.

I used to maintain the trunnions on my Lotus Elan with EP90 applied from a Wanner grease gun. It worked well with no issues arising.
