Original carpets - gearbox oil grommet/bung

Post by mowogg »

When I fitted new carpet set 20 years ago I thought my original one had the bung for the gearbox oil top up cut out into top layer. (so you can see the bung on the left hand side of the tunnel)

I am beginning to wonder if this was not the case. Does anyone still have original carpets to see. Mine is a late 62 car if this makes any difference.

Our is a 1958 car, and it definitely had a hole in the original carpet, so that the gearbox oil level could be checked by simply removing the grommet to access the square headed plug on the side of the gearbox.

I can confirm my November 1962 car has the cut-out hole in the carpet.

Richard
The standard filler and drain plugs fitted to a Minor gearbox have hexagon heads not square.

To remove the filler plug without dropping it under the car I used a Whitworth socket with a piece of paper stuffed into it to grip the head of the filler plug.

Phil,

Oops, definitely the memory playing tricks. Yes it is hexagon headed - I removed our A-Series gearbox in 1992 and replaced it with the Toyota T50 5-spd in 1998, and did not check before posting the original comment.

Web Editor: Pity I can't edit the previous post to correct the error. I understand that it can be misused, but in this case would be very helpful to do it. Can you go in a enter a correction in my earlier post?

A spark plug socket removes the filler plug beautifully.
