I made a fundamental mistake this morning, I put the battery on the wrong way around and smoke immediately started pouring out of the alternator, plus the red ignition light stays on when the key is out.
Have I cooked the alternator totally or is it salvageable?

Probably just cooked the diode pack. They can be changed. Google the alternator type and the pack might come up.

I’ll have a look at that over the weekend. If it’s more than just the diode, what would be a recommended make and model of alternator be?
