MM & early SERIES 2 GLOVEBOX LID CLOCK

Post by sparesman »

If you would like the Smiths accessory glovebox clock for your 1948/54 Minor but do not want to spend over £200 on an original one here is a possible solution.
I have made for one of my Minors a clock that looks identical to the genuine one but is based on a new quartz battery driven clock movement which I have fitted with a reproduction face and red painted hands. This is all fitted inside an original Smiths clock body and comes with a new chrome rim.
I can supply another of these for £60. See on the club stand at Beaulieu autojumble or I will have one with me at the MVA rally at Thoresby.

Here are some pics of the prototype. I will have to get the dial properly printed as I am not quite happy with it yet.

Can anybody tell me the thickness of the glovebox where the clock is inserted??
I have made a 3D printed housing for the clock and should have it on Saturday but I would like to know the final depth so I can make a fixing arrangement.

Your best bet might be simply to borrow a glovebox lid from a nearby Series MM/early Series II owner, if anyone has a spare.

I've got a box full of them, but as I'm overseas, not going to be much help ... but any owners nearby to you?
I have two Minors in upstate New York. One is the 1961 Traveller my dad bought new that year in London, where I was born. It's had a hard life but is still running cheerfully at 54K miles. The second is the oldest Minor confirmed to survive in North America, a LHD high-light Tourer built in April 1949. It's a total basket case, but will be restored over the coming years.

Thanks John,
There was one around here a few years ago but the owner sold it on and bought a late traveller.

Here's a photo of the clock with the 3D printed housing, glass, chrome bezel and different hands (which need shortening).

Hello Declan

Nice progress with that.

I have been working on a reproduction too. :)

One question: Where did you get the bezel?

The hands have been a problem for me. I have bought several pairs of commercial ones from the far east, but I'm not satisfied with them.

Don

Don,
I have sent you a PM with the source for the bezel :D
The hands are easy enough. In the first two photos above, the hands are made from 2.5mm red cable ties glued to a brass collet which was drilled through 2.5mm to take the cable ties. The cap is made from the blister packing of one of my blood thinning tablets (10mm) .
In the last photo above they are the coloured plastic hands that came with the movement filed down to size. The 10mm flat cap was punched again from blister packing and glued to the minute hand. These hands lack the extension on the minute hand. I will use the cable tie hands combined with the flat cap as shown in the last photo. I am having the dials professionally printed by the same company who printed the dials for my MG TD reproduction clocks which are made from a Ford Escort MK7 clock in a 3D printed housing-see below. The Ford Clock has buttons to set the time and runs off the car battery. The movement is basically a stepper motor. The hand were 3D resin printed but are very brittle.

Do you know the thickness of the glove box?

Declan

Hi Declan

Thank you for sharing.
Do you know the thickness of the glove box?
Can you clarify for me what dimension you are seeking? I think I have a Series II lid somewhere and I will be happy to take a measurement (if I can find it).

Hi Declan

The door is a shell, like the late models. So your ??? is not really the dimension you need.

The complicating factor is that there is a small inset in the face of the door for the clock, so again, your diagram is not accurate.

Sorry about the sandals. I'm in the antipodes ya know.

So... I guess you need to know the depth of the inset... unless your chrome surround is too big to fit the inset (I understand it is different from the one that came originally with the clock), in which case it might sit flush with the face of the door. To ascertain that, I can measure the outer dimension of the inset and you can compare this with the outer dimension your trim.

Thanks Don,
I got the outer dimension of the bezel from an old post on here. It is mentioned that it is 85 … 86mm. My bezel is 84mm OD

Declan

Jagnut's photos show that the opening for the clock is tapered with a slight step. So it seems we need to know where in the taper the diameter is the same as your trim ring (84mm).

Do you agree?

Can you provide that dimension Jagnut?

Hi,
There is, what I can best describe as, an inner lip and an outer one. The inner one is near the 84mm that you mention, if the clock measures this then it should sit nicely within what I am terming the outer one and may even sit flush with the lid.
It certainly won't 'pull through' once clamped in place and tightened up.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Thanks Jagnut

The measurement Declan needs, I think, is the distance between the point where the opening tapers to 84mm and the back face of the door. It looks like it would be 3 to 5mm. Can you measure this while you have your calipers warmed up?

Mike,
That really helps-fantastic!
Don,
Yes the depth of the inner lip would be helpful. I made a draft taking Mike's measurements and popped them into the CAD. I can add a lip to the housing and an O-ring and it should sit nicely in the recess.
This is what it could look like. I could also use the same bezel combined with the Morris logo to make another option.

Declan
