Crankshaft Pulley Retaining nut tightening

Post by Peatminor »

Hi all,

I've just changed my timing chain and I'm left wondering how I tighten the crankshaft pulley retaining nut to 70lb/ft as per the Haynes manual without the crankshaft turning. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

You could use an implement to stop the flywheel from turning.

Putting the vehicle in gear may give enough resistance, if the engine is in the car.

Thanks for your response.

I had thought this but it still moves a fair bit - I guess I could try hitting the spanner with a hammer! 😬

Select 4th gear, and get someone to press very firmly on the footbrake, then torque up to 70 lbf. ft.

If the engine is out the flywheel method is the answer. Is it out?

Wouldn't a firmly-applied handbrake keep it as a one-man job?
